Union wins APPR reprieve

Gov. Kathy Hochul Friday signed a bill suspending, for an additional year, the Annual Professional Performance Review process. Advanced through grassroots advocacy from NYSUT members and lobbying by union legislative staff, the bill recently passed both the state Senate and the Assembly.

“As we come to the end of another school year that has been anything but normal, we welcome the governor’s decision to suspend the APPR process for another year,” said NYSUT President Andy Pallotta. “We will continue working with the legislature and the governor to address the APPR

As you know, this past Wednesday the U. S. Supreme Court ruled in the case of Janus v. AFSCME that the collection of agency fees by public sector unions is an unconstitutional infringement of the First Amendment rights of nonmembers. Nonmembers now have the right to receive the same contractual benefits as members without paying anything to support the union that secures those benefits for all of us.

Within hours of the announcement of the decision, thousands of union members across the state began receiving solicitations through their school email accounts

MEA Members March For Our Lives

On Saturday, March 24, 2018 a handful of MEA members joined tens of thousands of activists throughout our country and the world by attending local March For Our Lives events.  Thank you to Melinda Smith, Patrick Dillon, Kathy Olwy and retiree Nancy Reisman who attended the Great Neck event.  Thank you to Karen Murphy and Hae Jung Yang who attended the New York City event.  Thank you to Julie Colbert and Anne Soldano who attended the Glen Cove event.
